Georgian frolics with The Fox Trap’t

  • The Merchant Taylors’ Hall Aldwark York, England, YO1 7BX United Kingdom (map)

It is our pleasure to present on of Mr Joseph Peterson’s finest Ballad Operas. Despite being lost over the centuries, Joseph Peterson, Parishioner of Holy Trinity, ) was rightly proud of this gem from1739 and also very fond of his adopted home town. He writes:

"To the GENTLEMEN and LADIES of YORK. The repeated favours I have received from you and the great goodness you have been pleased to extend to me, have prompted me to the presumption of offering the following trifle for your perusal"

So, nearly 300 years on, and probably in the very same hall in which it was first performed, please join us to resurrect this masterpiece. What can you expect? Well, lots of 18th century theatrical cliches,  mannered acting, characters with names outlining everything you need know of their personalities,  a wicked uncle, clever servants,  comedy foreigners,  a bit of physical comedy.  The Raree Show or The Fox Trap’t delivers all of that. Join us for a romp through an excellent tale of a ward trapped into marriage against the wishes of her dead father, couples divided and reunited, a sword fight, a terrible French accent, a trick and lots of “happy ever after”.

All proceeds will be used for the conservation of the World War 1 Roll of Honour from Bedern National School which is displayed in Holy Trinity Goodramgate
