Buildings of England- Medieval Churches and Halls and Their Uses

Friday 27th March, 1.30pm – 2.30pm

This lecture will explore the influential Buildings of England series by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner and its lasting impact on the study and appreciation of Britain’s historic architecture. Focusing particularly on medieval halls and churches, Dr. Jane Grenville will examine how these buildings were designed and used, and what they reveal about the social, religious, and communal life of the medieval period.

Dr. Grenville is a respected archaeologist and architectural historian with a long-standing interest in medieval buildings and urban heritage. After a degree in Archaeology from Cambridge University, Dr. Grenville worked in buildings conservation until taking a lectureship at the University of York in the Archaeology of Buildings. Here she founded the MA in the Archaeology of Buildings and developed existing MAs in Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation of Historic Buildings. In retirement she has revised Pevsner’s ‘Yorkshire: the North Riding in the Buildings of England series. She is interested in the theory and practice of buildings conservation and specialised in the medieval period, although Pevsner exercised her broad knowledge of all periods.
